We have created the first documentary series that reveals the centrality of the quilt to American culture. You will hear from an amazing group of academics, savvy dealers and passionate quilt makers who will share their intriguing ideas, personal experiences and sometimes-conflicting opinions as you go on an unprecedented journey beyond the “how to” and history of quilts.
Produced by the Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics is independently produced and funded. Funds received from DVD sales after expenses will go toward future quilt projects.
The series (retail price: $39.95) is a 2 DVD set (250 minutes) containing all nine episodes plus bonus features exclusive only to the DVD including: The Swing, A Young Collector, Why This Series, Dancing Quilts, Cheap Date, Judging a Book by its Cover, Antique Shows: The Back Side and more.
We want guilds and their members to own the series and spread the word. We are offering guilds a 40% discount (guild price $23.97 each) on the purchase of four or more copies (plus shipping). - Download our “Guild Program Ideas” to learn how you can use the series at guild events and how you can create special programming for your guild.
- Visit www.whyquiltsmatter.org to learn more about the series in general – watch clips, read a quick episode summary, and see a list of who appears in each episode. You can pick your favorite and start from there.
- Visit the Resources section for downloadable Image Resource Guides (IRGs) for each episode containing information about every image in the episode. People have been downloading the IRGs to their iPads or laptops and watching the episode along with the Image Resource Guide.
- The series will air nationally on a limited number of PBS stations over the next three years.

A fellow quilter attended NQA and purchased this DVD….when she got home she donated it to our Guild. As our Guild “librarian” I decided to preview it so that I would know what it was all about when I encourage other members to view it…..I was blown away – it is so well done, interesting and informative that I found myself being persuaded from my own viewpoints a number of times. Giving us “the whole picture” gives one the benefit a different perspective. I could go on and on but I will save it for a written review in our newsletter.
